Psychology is the science that studies human behavior and mental processes. Because of travel, migration, technological advances, and globalization, psychologists use theory and research to observe, describe, explain, and predict any given behavior or behavioral patterns that take place in various settings. No other field challenges the individual`s analytic abilities as directly as psychology because it requires human knowledge and training to understand another human`s behavior.

 

The Psychology Department has organized its courses and experiences to develop student mastery of the concepts, theory, and methods of psychology. Psychological perspectives, such as developmental, cognitive, physiological, environmental, cross-cultural, and psychopathological, serve as foundations for individual courses. These courses become analytical tools in the study of complex psychological issues and allow you to develop an understanding of both research and practitioner approaches to the field, as well as acquiring first-hand experience that helps you to develop the kind of understanding and empathy that characterizes the competent professional in psychology. The psychology major at GAU offers therefore a choice of two tracks, the Research track and the Professional track, according to the areas you wish to emphasize in your course of study.

 

Additionally, nationally and internationally recognized Master’s programs are offered in Applied Social Psychology and Counseling Psychology.

PSY101 - Introduction to Psychology I (3,0)3

The purpose of this course is to introduce the student to the broad range of topics that are studied in the field of psychology. This course provides the student with a broad introduction to the field of psychology, one of the social sciences. Among the topics covered are gathering data on the causes and correlates of behavior, and key figures in psychology and their theories. This survey of psychology will acquaint the student with the major concepts and terminology of the discipline and give a better understanding of self and others. In the process students will hopefully gain some insight into what makes people think, feel, and behave the way that they do.

PHIL101 - Introduction to Philosophy (3,0)3

This course provides an introduction to the fundamental concepts and argumentative strategies of philosophy. In the course students will understand and use basic concepts of philosophy, discuss philosophical problems, identify major subdivisions within the discipline of philosophy, logically evaluate a philosophical argument and speak and write clearly about philosophical issues, and identify core ideas of some influential philosophers.

EGL101 - Development of Reading Skills I (3,0)3

This supportive course includes the reinforcement of reading through reading selections with review of structural patterns and paragraph.

PSY102 - Introduction to Psychology II (3,0)3

This course is a continuation of PSY 101 and will cover the following topics: human development, health psychology, personality, psychological assessment, psychological disorders and treatments, and social psychology. The major aim of this course will be to gain the knowledge of interpretation of the topics above in the light of major theoretical approaches in psychology as cognitive, psychodynamic, behaviourist and socio-cultural.

 

PSY103 – Elementary Mathematics (3,0)3

 

The main objective of the course is to provide the mathematical background needed for psychological and psychometrical research and analyses.

PSY104 -  English for Psychology (3,0)3

This course provides extra English language instruction on basic terminology used in major disciplines of psychology. It also gives students practice in communicating clearly, both orally and in written reports, in an appropriate style or format.

SOC104 - Introduction to Sociology (3,0)3

This course provides an introduction to basic principles, concepts and theories of sociology, the place of sociology among social sciences, and an examination of various culture, institutions and social places.

EGL102 - Development of Writing Skills II (3,0)3

This supportive course includes the reinforcement of writing skills with review of structural patterns and paragraph and summary writing. (Prerequisite: EGL101)

 

PSY211 – Research Design in Psychology (2,1)3 

This course introduces students to research articles/journals, theories and hypotheses, experimental research, quasi-experimental research, non-experimental research, using design decision trees, ethics, the research process, literature search, critical reading of the literature, and APA style for a paper write-up.

PSY213 – Critical Thinking (3,0)3

This course explores the process of thinking critically and guides students in thinking more clearly, insightfully and effectively. Concrete examples from students` experience and contemporary issues help students develop the abilities to solve problems, analyze issues, and make informed decisions in their academic career and personal lives. Readings, structured writing assignments and ongoing discussions help students develop language skills while fostering good thinking abilities.

CS201 - Communication Skills I (3,0)3

Advanced writing skills with special attention to those most commonly used in private (business) and government. The aim of the course is to provide information on the standards and formats of managerial correspondence; techniques for preparing informational & analytical reports. (Prerequisite: EGL102)

PSY221 - Developmental Psychology I (3,)3

This course explores the changes in human behaviour and development from conception to death in the light of biological, psychological and social influences. The aims of this course are to understand the main theoretical and practical themes of human development from conception to late childhood in the light of cultural and cross-cultural influences. Emphasis will also be given to psychological problems associated with different periods of life.

PSY251 - Social Psychology I (3,0)3

A historical overview of theories, methods, and research topics in social psychology, Topics to be covered include social perception, social attitudes and attitude formation and change, interpersonal attraction, aggression, altruism, authority, stereotypes, gender roles and prejudice.

PSY204 – Biological Basis of Behavior (3,0)3

This course takes a biological approach to understanding behavior. Biopsychologists study the biological processes – e.g. neural, genetic, endocrine- that underlie our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Research in this area focuses on the relationship between brain and behavior. This course will introduce the students to the biological basis of special topics such as sensory perception, emotion, motivated behavior, memory, learning, states of consciousness, language, and mood disorders. The course also provides a background on nervous and endocrine system anatomy and functioning and an introduction to genetics and evolution.

CS202 - Communication Skills II (3,0)3

This course is an introduction to principles of empirical research; problem identification, hypothesis generation, research design, data collection & analysis. It includes the application of research methods knowledge to managerial, economic, social & political issues. (Prerequisite EGL102).
 

PSY218 – Statistics and Research Methods I (2,1)3 

This course includes the following topics to the student: variables, populations and samples; sampling designs, scales of measurement, descriptive statistics, probability and the normal distribution, sample estimates, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, one sample and two sample tests – parametric and non-parametric. A guided research project will be conducted on this course.

PSY240 - Clinical Psychology I (3,0)3 6

The main goal of this course is  to understand fundamental concepts of clinical psychology, including information related to the history and development of the discipline, approaches to clinical problems, methods of assessment, specific techniques  and possible careers involving clinical psychology. A major  emphasis will be on the cognitive-behavioral field of clinical psychology, as this  particular approach has provided the most empirical evidence as being successful in the  treatment of problems addressed by clinical psychology.

PSY230 - Experimental Psychology (3,0)3

This course gives an introduction to the techniques of experimental and correlational research used in the study of human behavior in the context of specific disciplines of psychology such as cognitive, developmental or social psychology. This course is designed to connect research design and methods courses to the literature in different disciplines of psychology.

PSY331 – Testing and Measurement in Psychology (3,0)3

Basic principles in psychological testing and measurement will be covered in this course. Topics included in the course are test construction, reliability and validity indexes of tests, test standardisation. Also included in the course are intelligence testing, aptitude testing, personality tests and inventories.

PSY321 – Cognitive Psychology (3,0)3

This course is an introduction to the basic concepts of cognitive psychology. The course surveys areas such as perception, attention, memory, language, and thought. The relation of cognitive psychology to cognitive science and to neuropsychology is also covered.

PSY361 – Personality and its Assessment (3,0)3

This course is a critical examination of the theories of personality, with a review of the concepts and applications of personality assessment.

PSY335 – Industrial and Organizational Psychology (3,0)3

An examination of the psychological aspects of work and work settings and includes aspects such as job analysis, personnel, selection and placement, performance, job satisfaction, supervisor-employee relations.

PSY318 – Statistics and Research Methods II (3,3)6 

This course includes the following topics to the student: SPSS statistics package, 2-sample difference tests (parametric and non-parametric), 2-variable tests of association/correlation (parametric vs non-parametric).  A guided research project will be conducted on this course.

PSY352 – Social Psychology II (3,0)3

This course is a continuation of Social Psychology I and as such includes topics of group and group processes, conformity, cooperation competition, inter group conflicts, helping and aggression. An emphasis is placed on the role of experimental and correlational research in social psychology.

 

PSY322 – Developmental Psychology II (3,0)3 

This course builds on Developmental Psychology I but overviews theories and research in social and cognitive development from a research-based perspective.

PSY344 – Clinical Psychology II (3,3)6

This course builds on Clinical Psychology I, with a focus on contemporary practice of clinical psychology, including theories and techniques of behavioural assessment and the management of psychological disorders. Primary focus is on research findings relevant to assessment, aetiology, prognosis and management of mental health disorders.

PSY346 – Health Psychology (3,0)

This course aims to examine the theoretical perspectives in the developing field of health psychology. The course will examine recent research on the effects of psychological processes on health. Topics covered will include: health beliefs and attributions, stress, stress and illness, pain management, excessive eating and drinking, smoking and drug use, and the role of psychology in HIV and cancer treatment and recovery.

PSY348 – Counselling and Psychotherapy (3,0)

Majortheories and approaches are discussed in the course. Also, some basic methods and techniques of counselling are introduced. Counselling in education, health centres, work settings etc. are also treated. Main types of psychotherapy techniques and their application to major mental disorders are also reviewed.

PSY312 – Ethics and History of Psychology (3,0)3

This course provides general and specific guidance for ethical conduct in the science and practice of psychology.  Using case examples, the course covers the clinical practice of psychology, research, teaching, supervision of trainees, development of assessment instruments, conducting assessments, school psychology, educational counseling, organizational consulting, forensic activities, social intervention, administration, and other activities. The course also reviews the historical development of psychology as a  with its diverse sub-disciplines, both as a profession and as a research tradition.

PSY401 – Final Dissertation I (3,3)6

This is the first semester of the final year student’s supervised Dissertation – whether on the Research Track or the Professional Track. For the Research Track this involves the literature review and APA style proposal. For the Professional Track this involves an internship.

PSY402 – Final Dissertation II (3,3)6

This is the second semester of the final year student’s supervised Dissertation – whether on the Research Track or the Professional Track. In this phase of the Dissertation, students complete their Dissertations and present their work for assessment. The Dissertation is intended to involve the necessary knowledge and skills needed for the students’ continuing career in psychology.

 

ELECTIVE COURSES

 

PSY301 – Pre-Dissertation Research (3,3)6

This is a compulsory elective given in the third year, enabling students to do a research project to explore areas of interest in psychology to enable them to commit to either the Research Track or Professional Track. This elective requires student supervisors and guidance through the research process.

PSY341 - Environmental Psychology (3,0)3

This course aims to familiarise students with issues and developments in the study of major behaviour in relation with the physical environment. Theories and research procedures in the study of person-environment transaction will be surveyed. Topics of the course include environmental perception and cognition, environmental stressors, pollution, crowding, territoriality and personal space.

PSY375 - Neuropsychology (3,0)3

  An introduction to neuropsychology, as viewed through the lens of a variety of diseases with neuropsychological sequenale, individual case studies, behavioral syndromes, brief vignettes, use of a neuroanatomy coloring book, and neuroimaging.

 

PSY380 – Educational and School Psychology (3,0)3

Introduces psychology bases of instructional systems. Examines development and learning of children, adolescents and adults, teacher behavior, and other applications of psychology to education. Covers construction, validation and use of classroom measurement and diagnostic procedures

PSY382 – Cross-Cultural Psychology (3,0)3

The course looks at methods and issues involved in cross-cultural psychology, with topics including cross-cultural methodology and the application of psychological theory, as well as how knowledge of cultural differences has been applied to situations of cultural contact.

PSY347 - Psychology of Aging (3,0)3

This course is an analysis of the factor affecting the aged individual. The emphasis is on physiological, cognitive, sensory, personality and interpersonal changes occurring with age.

PSY449 - Psychology and Gender Issues (3,0)3

This course will explore the range and historical development of different theoretical perspective, shifting themes and dominant methodologies in psychology as they bear upon issues of gender and sexuality. The controversies surrounding the nature of “femininity” and “masculinity”, issues of rape, pornography and violence will also be covered.

PSY451 – Drugs and Psychopharmacology (3,0)3

This course looks at the biochemistry of drug use, addiction and behavior. It also examines the history, biochemistry, main effects and side effects of prescription psychotropic medication. The goal of the course is to learn to work with clients who are taking psychotropic medication and monitor them for side effects and contraindications. Ethics and methods of working with medical personnel are included.

PSY460 - Forensic Psychology (3,0)3

This course is designed to provide an overview of the practice of clinical forensic psychology and will address the nature of forensic psychology, ethical issues, legal competencies, testimony by expert witnesses, and criminal responsibilities.

PSY425 - Recent Issues and Research Trends in Developmental Psychology (3,0)3

This course is designed for advanced students and aims to provide a critical review of recent research issues in developmental psychology.

PSY455 - Child Abuse (3,0)3

The types of child abuse and psychological consequences are discussed. Important factors in the psychological interview and therapy of these cases are described, as well as research methodologies and research findings. Legal aspects of child abuse and neglect are also covered.

PSY472 – Emotion and Motivation (3,0)3

Beginning with an overview of the historical development of research on motivation and emotion, this course will examine the ethological, physiological, cognitive and social-cultural perspectives on the fundamental question in the field of psychology: Why do individuals behave the way they do?

 

PSY476 – Criminology (3,0)3

This course studies the many types, causes and effects of crime and how this is linked to psychological perspectives within human behavior. Topics include the study of crime, criminality and criminal justice institutions and processes, and psychological perspectives on these.

PSY477 – Special Topics in Experimental Psychology (3,0)3

This course goes into depth in an area of experimental psychology in cognitive, social or developmental areas, according to the instructor’s area of specialization.

PSY478 – Special Topics in Applied Psychology (3,0)3

This course goes into depth in an area of applied psychology according to the instructor’s area of specialization.
